She is young, very young. She is beautiful, very beautiful but she is
also talented, very talented. And like we promised you that we will
keep bringing to you new stars that will take Nollywood by storm, have
discovered her. Today we bring you Mary,Ogechukwu Ezimako.
“I am from a family of four made up of my father, my mother myself
and my kid brother. We are a close knit family and we love each other
with a passion. My mother is my greatest champion.”
Mary hails from Orlu Imo State and is an undergraduate of Mass
Communications of the Federal Polythecnic Nekede Owerri, Imo State. So
how does she combine her acting and schooling?
“Just like everybody else I manage somehow. Besides, I am not overly
active right now. Education is ultra important and has taken most of my
time. But I have been involved in a soap opera, and a few other movies
like DAUGHTER’S IN-LAW, SQUAD 24, UGLY AND DANGEROUS and NOT MY WILL.
Most of them were shot in Portharcourt and Asaba because I have been
working from the eastern axis but right now I have secure a movie role
and a role in another soap in Lagos and I intend to stake my claim here.
I know how those here look at the Industry from the east but talent is
talent and I believe I can do well here with the talent God has given
me.”
Relatively new in the Nollywood Mary got involved in 2010 dropped off
for a while and came back fully in 2012. She has remarkable confidence
and is poised to go very far.
“I started off as a model then became an actor because of the need to
express different facets of my talent. My start was basically
inauspicious. I went for an audition in Owerri. I was very shaky because
I have always been afraid of crowds but in the end I secured the lead
role in the soap.”
Asked about the major keys to success in the industry Mary says
“Believe in yourself if not you may not make it because of the
challenges facing especially young female artistes. There are people who
look better than you and can act better and also know more important
people. So you must develop absolute confidence in your abilities.”
What may those challenges be? Do they include issues like sexual harassment and intimidation by producers and directors?
“A lot of people deny that there is no sexual harassment in the
industry but it does exist but it is also about your principles, keeping
them and sticking to them. Nobody will drag you into bed and force you
to do what you do not want to do. Your future is in your hands and only
you can make it happen”
Mary is here to stay but is that really enough.
“Nope. I want to go far, make a name. Make a difference, be a role
model. But It’s not by my power, it’s in God’s hand . I admire RITA
DOMINIC, MERCY JOHNSON, OLU JACOBS, CHARLES INOJIE. For his comedy. JIM
IYKE. JUNIOR POPE and a couple of other actors. I look up to them.
As she looks up to them, we quietly look at her and wait for her to find her feet. Watch Mary Ogechi Ezimako.
